As Exciting as Watching Water Freeze

Sometimes winter seems about as exciting as watching paint dry, or grass grow, or water freeze — wait a second. Watching water freeze can be exciting. Granted it doesn’t have the drama of a heavy spring runoff, a summer cloudburst, or a flashflood. It’s subtle, quiet. The beauty of it can be easy to overlook, but it’s there. It sneaks in on cold winter nights and leaves behind glittering gifts of ice.

I sat by a little waterfall to watch the spray freeze on the rocks and twigs, turning them into exquisite crystal sculptures. And I thought about the flip-side, of being trapped the way the stream is. Trapped in the mountains and unable to escape winter’s frigid grasp. How much of his humanity would a man give up to survive? And that led to a story idea which is now in the works. Updates on that coming soon!

In the meantime, make the most of this January weather. Get out, find a little creek, and watch the magic happen.
