End and Beginning

As summer and autumn begin to merge, I’m taken by the subtle flush of yellow over green, the last riot of wildflowers, and the teasing of the aspens. I want to see them in all their golden glory, but then again I’m not ready yet. This special time in the high country—the gateway between seasons—always seems so fleeting and I don’t want to miss any of it.

From the fun and challenge of summer hikes, I find myself sitting more. Sitting to watch and listen and breathe. The trees have a different aroma now. The grasses go from a bright growing scent to a warm sweet smell. The chatty squirrels are playing less and working more to prepare for winter. The birds songs are changing as the ones who must go begin their long journeys.

So I sit and I watch. Part of me wants to wing south, too, but I’ll stay. Because I don’t want to miss anything.
